Good morning all,
In an effort to keep you all informed as much as possible, I am going to try to start sending a regular
daily email update regarding the County status on COVID-19. The email will most likely come first
thing in the morning, using the previous day’s numbers. So, while the number may differ a little from
what is actual, it will be close. The current number is ZERO cases and that is definite as of the time I
wrote this. I will then include other new or important update information. I will use established
email lists to send these emails so if you are not interested, please simply delete.
The updates will be in an attachment and will be in the same format daily. Please see attached for
the first update.
Sincerely,
Danette York
Public Health Director

Lab Confirmed COVID-19 Cases in Butte County: ZERO
Information Update:
Public Health staff continues to monitor some individuals in the county. Monitoring an
individual has potentially been exposed and is asked to self-quarantine for 14 days to
make sure they do not start showing symptoms. I will not be able to provide you with any
information on people being monitored as the numbers change continuously and due to
privacy reasons.
Public Health staff and others who are participating in the Public Health Department
Operation Center continue to work to respond to all requests for information, support and
resources. Please be patient with us if you reach out.
Testing: Individuals in Butte County are being tested for COVID-19 when testing is
appropriate. I also cannot tell you how many tests are being performed as it is constantly
changing. And, commercial labs are now starting to test and we will not know of tests
being performed, we will only get notified if a test is positive.
Today, 3/11/2020, The World Health Organization has declared COVID-19 outbreak a
global pandemic. Pandemic vs. Epidemic:
Epidemic is defined as a regional outbreak of an illness that spreads unexpectedly
Pandemic is defined as the worldwide spread of a new disease that affects large
numbers of people the fact that it is now officially declared as a pandemic does not
mean it is any more severe than it already was.
As a nation, state and even locally public health officials are discussing mitigation efforts
as opposed to containment efforts so you will hear more mitigation language in the
days/weeks to come, the difference is:
Containment is when we do case investigations to identify close contacts and try to
quarantine the individuals to prevent the spread of a disease
Mitigation includes social distancing efforts such as recommending closures of
mass/large gatherings
This is a rapidly evolving situation, please note that all information is current as of the
time it is written.
