ANNUAL GRAVEL ROAD STABILIZATION PROJECT
Butte County, Calif.--It is time once again for Butte County Public Works to begin the annual gravel road
stabilization project. This process typically involves preparing the existing roadway by grading and
repairing any drainage issues, adding additional gravel where necessary, then watering and compacting
the roadway surface. Lastly, a soil stabilization product (Dustgard) is applied to chemically bind the
roadway materials together, with the goal of reducing the formation of washboard and potholes. Once
the soil stabilization product is applied, traffic should stay off the roadway surface until the product has
been absorbed into the roadway surface – usually less than 30 minutes. This work will help keep the
roadways smooth and safe for drivers throughout the long dry summer. Work will be performed on the
entirety of Helltown Road (Butte Creek Canyon area), starting at Centerville Rd. going approx. 1.6 miles
to the end of the County maintained road. Crews will also treat Mud Creek Road, in Cohasset, starting at
Cohasset Road for approx. 1.5 miles to the intersection at Vilas Road.
Motorists that travel these roadways should expect delays. Times for application will vary daily, but will
generally start during times of low traffic volumes, on April 15, 2020-April 16, 2020 from 8:00am to
8:00pm. Roads will be open, but will have traffic control in place and motorists should expect
approximately 30 minute delays. All work is being performed in strict conformance with State and Local
COVID-19 social distancing rules and hand sanitization guidelines, with the goal of keeping our critical
infrastructure repairs moving forward.
The Butte County Public Works Department has been serving its residents since 1850, providing cost
effective roadway maintenance services. The Department maintains approximately 1,300 miles of
roadways, over 500 bridges and drainage structures and more than 18,000 road signs.
