I am following up on an email I sent to ALL supervisors last week following an Action News report regarding the
problems we are having In Magalia with squatters, crime, illegal camping and raw sewage being dumped on the
ground( near streams and waterways!)
If you read the report you will see there is 170 comments from people that are having the same issues up here. Out
of those comments only 1% support the extension for dry camping up here. We want this to be for CAMPFIRE
survivors that are rebuilding only!!
It is imperative if you extend this camping ordinance, that you require people to hook to utilities. If they are truly
camp fire survivors and want to rebuild that’s part of the requirement -you have to have utilities. If they haven’t
been able to do that in the last two years it’s not gonna happen.
What is happening is people are living in squalor, some in sheds, some under tarps in dog kennels and many of
these properties have multiple RVs on them! . The original rule was two RVs and I thought they were supposed to
be registered RVs. It’s got out-of-control up here !!!!!!They are pulling these UNREGISTERED RVS up and down
the roads!
My understanding is this Chapter 53 was created for camp fire survivors wanting to rebuild and live on their
property while doing that. That’s the bottom line but the ordinance has not been upheld!
There is even a realtor up here that is going around buying up properties and letting these dumpy RVs live on them
and rent from him. I know for a fact at one property that he has done that and the RV pulled on his property with
slides hanging out-( these RVs are not even registered but they’re pulling them up and down the roads here every
day. )The sheriff checked on this one on the property and discovered it was occupied by a felon with a warrant and
the sheriff arrested him for a meth!!
I have contacted every person that is involved in helping us clean this up; Code Enforcement office( Kristen), the
officer for Code Enforcement (Ofc Sean Williams), Sheriff, highway patrol and even the supervisors office speaking
with Casey Hatcher about the problem. She tells me Butte County does not have the resources like Paradise to help
people. I am wondering what happened to any recovery funds that were received by Butte County we have not seen
evidence of that helping us up here.
this is a very serious situation up here!!!!!My husband and I we have paused our rebuild to see what you guys are
going to do to help clean up OUR community. Right now we could not sell our property we would have to give it
away due to the crap in plain view of our backyard!
Action news is wanting to do a follow-up to the story and I can assure you that’s going to happen because the
community has spoken through these Facebook posts and as a result of this news article.
People WERE SHOCKED At this decision to extend the dry camping up here. I think many of us were looking
forward to that ending this year hoping the neighborhoods WOULD BE getting cleaned up as a result of that. But
now you’ve given permission to everybody who wants to come UP here to find a piece of land and dump their
crappy RVs on. These are not people that are rebuilding!!!!!!!Many are not Campfiresurvivors!
We would appreciate if the supervisors would take another look at this ordinance and work with us to protect the
true campfire survivors that are trying to rebuild.
Sincerely
Susan Copeland
