WHEREAS, Mel Lightbody, the Director of Butte County Library Department, announced her retirement effective
September 17, 2020; and
WHEREAS, during her 8 years of service as the Director, Mel led notable improvements in library service; and
WHEREAS, Mel implemented technology innovations in the Butte County Library, becoming the first Director to
introduce self-service technology in branch libraries; and
WHEREAS, throughout her career, Mel has championed innovation, initiatives and projects that have not been
traditionally part of the library service, such as the creation of a Veterans, Resource Center, introduction of MakerSpace,
implementation of self -checkout service, and etc.; and
WHEREAS, under her leadership, the Library received numerous grants, which have improved the Butte County
library services to residents; and
WHEREAS,. Mel has served as the President of the California County Librarians Association, Chair of NorthNet
Libraries, and Board member on the regional library board; and
WHEREAS, Mel is a beloved colleague, manager, and department head as well as a highly -regarded member in
the California library community; and
WHEREAS, Mel has selflessly provided 28 years of service to the library community; and
WHEREAS, Mel is never afraid to apologize if needed and always puts her staff and members of the public above
anything else; and
WHEREAS, with her sharp mind and quick wit, Mel consistently showed tireless leadership to her staff, especially
during tough times like Camp Fire, COVID-19 and now Bear Fire;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby wishes to express
gratitude for Mel's leadership and dedication to the County for over 8 years in support of promoting innovative, responsive
library services to the residents of Butte County.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 29Th day of September, 2020, by the
following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Connelly, Lucero, Ritter, Teeter, and Chair Lambert
