HomeMy WebLinkAbout20-174WHEREAS, after 28 years of dedicated public service, Deputy Jay Waananen will be retiring on December 30, 2020. During his career, his service to the citizens of Butte County and the Butte County Sheriff's Office has been exemplary; and WHEREAS, Deputy Waananen began his law enforcement career in 1992 when he was hired by the Butte County Sheriff's Office as a Deputy Sheriff. Deputy Waananen served as a Field Training Officer (FTO) on patrol for over 10 years and had a large part in the training of many of the Butte County Sheriffs Office current sworn, staff. Deputy Waananen worked as a Designated Area Deputy for the Cohasset and Forest Ranch areas for 5 years. In 2011, Deputy Waananen transferred to the Butte County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit where he still works as a Marine Unit Deputy today. Patrolling the various waterways within the county, investigating boating violations and conducting boating accident investigations are just part of his duties. He has also assisted the Butte County Sheriffs Office Special Enforcement Unit (SEU) with hundreds of search warrants on illegal marijuana operations; and WHEREAS, Deputy Waananen has held numerous auxiliary duties throughout his career. Deputy Waananen has served as a Firearms Instructor since 1998; he became, a member of the Butte County Sheriff's Office Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team in, 1999, working as a team sniper and entry team member until he retired from the team in 2015. Deputy Waananen a!lso, served as a Butte County Sheriffs Office Honor Guard member for several years; and WHEREAS, Deputy Waananen has worked and assisted with several critical incidents during his career. Most recently, in 2017, he assisted with the near catastrophic failure of the Oroville Dam's Emergency Spillway. In 2018, Deputy Waananen assisted with California's deadliest and most destructive wildfire, the Camp Fire, and in 2020, Deputy Waananen assisted with recent North Complex fire. in all of these incidents, Deputy Wa,ananen conducted emergency evacuations of citizens and assisted with operations throughout the entirety of each of these incidents; and WHEREAS, for the reasons stated above and for many more, too numerous to express, Deputy Waananen embodies the characteristics of a superb Deputy Sheriff, exemplary law enforcement officer, and great citizen of Butte County; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby express their deep appreciation for the exemplary service and unselfish dedication of Jay Waananen during his career with, Butte County Sheriffs Office. vote PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 8th day of December 2020, by the following AYES: Supervisors Connelly, Lucero, Teeter, and Chair Lambert NOES: None ABSENT: Supervisor Ritter ABSTAIN: None Andy Pickett, Chief Administrative Officer and Clerk of the Board of Supervisors By: eAl- .
