For years, the Neal Road Recycling and Waste Facility has been permitted to accept treated wood products – such as rail road ties, pressure treated lumber, such as fence posts and guard rail posts. The Statute that allows California landfills to accept this material is set to expire – and it does not appear that the Legislature is willing to extend the time period. This means that effective January 1, 2021, NRRWF will not be able to accept these commonly found materials. These materials will need to be taken to a Class 1 Hazardous waste landfill for disposal. Kettleman Hills and Buttonwillow Landfill Facilities are the closest facilities that can accept this material – both are 6 plus hours away. The Rural County Representatives of California has been pushing very hard to have the statute extended, and they collected signatures from many landfill’s and other local agencies requesting additional time to put together a plan on how to deal with this material. Thus far, it does not appear that the State is willing to extend the timeframe. We will begin messaging this change to landfill customers later this week. https://dtsc.ca.gov/toxics-in-products/treated-wood-waste/ Dennis J.
