3.How do we know what types of businesses we have?
Information collected through Dun & Bradstreet, provided by NoRTEC. There can certainly be errors
in the data collected, but this is the most comprehensive, publically available source.
4.Business licenses for Butte County
Currently Butte County does not require standard business licenses. There are certain types of
businesses that are required to complete certain applications or permits:

Each of the incorporated jurisdictions require permits: Biggs, Gridley, Chico, Oroville, and
Paradise.

6.Sales tax and TOT tax 2019 compared to 2020.
Sales Tax
We can think of the local sales tax in three components; 1) Sales tax on purchases in the
unincorporated area of the County (about $4 million); 2) the 5% we get from Chico’s sales tax (about
$1.4 million) and; 3) the revenue related to the County pool which is now primarily online sales tax
(about $700,000 and growing because of both the increase in online sales and legal changes
increasing the number of online purchases that get taxed).
FY 2018-19 $5,593,752
FY 2019-20 $6,266,919
TOT
Transient Occupancy Tax is collected on short term rentals. This now includes vacation rentals via a
contract with Air B&B. It’s hard to tell what “normal” looks like here since the Air B&B contract
revenues came about the same time as the Camp Fire which was followed by COVID all could have
caused variation to vacation rentals. FY 2017-18 data is provided in order to see the pre-Air B&B
level.
FY 2017-18 $19,476
FY 2018-19 $58,124
FY 2019-20 $66,256
