Re: Kanaka Hydroelectric Project (P-7242) Plan & Schedule to Surrender FERC License
Dear Secretary Bose,
This letter is in response to your letter dated December 3, 2020 requesting that STS Hydropower, LLC
(STS) submit a plan and schedule within 60 days (by February 1, 2021) to surrender the Kanaka
Hydroelectric Project (P-7242) FERC License.
STS is currently in the process of developing a draft surrender application. On January 25, 2021, STS
held an initial consultation meeting with relevant agencies to begin the consultation process. STS
provided an overview of the Kanaka project and a summary of preliminary decommissioning plans. The
agencies provided initial feedback on potential environmental effects that may be associated with
decommissioning.
STS is currently in the process of engaging a consultant to support the license surrender process. STS
expects that a consultant will be fully engaged in February 2021 and that preparation of a complete draft
ndrd
license surrender application will occur in the 2 and 3 quarter of 2021. It is expected that a draft
application will be submitted to relevant agencies for formal review and comment prior to the end of the
rd
3 quarter and that a final application will be submitted to the Commission prior to the end of 2021. To
keep the Commission informed of its progress, STS will submit a status update to your office in the event
of any material changes to this proposed plan and schedule.
