During the last board meeting Public Health was asked about a comparison of deaths due to
Influenza and deaths due to COVID-19.
Influenza death data is compiled for the “flu season”, which is typically October – mid to late May
each year. Therefore, I asked staff to compare the data from COVID-19 deaths for the same time
periods. As of February 11, 2021 the information is as follows:

Notes:
- there is a lag in death tabulation due to lags in receiving death certificates and the time it takes us
to investigate and verify deaths as COVID deaths so the count as of Feb 11 reflects deaths verified by
Feb 11 and not all deaths that occurred by Feb 11.
- Probable deaths are those that only had an antigen test. To be a confirmed death, a molecular (PCR
type) test is required.
- All deaths counted as COVID deaths had COVID listed on the death certificate AND had case
investigation and medical records reviewed by Public Health to verify COVID as a cause of death.
