Good Morning,
I am writing today to alert you that over the weekend, staff in Child Welfare in coordination with
Paradise Police Department and Butte County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation of a
possible child homicide. The baby was three weeks old and suffered from what initially appeared to
be failure to thrive. Upon further examination, the baby was sent to UCD and it was determined
that the baby suffered from a remarkable brain bleed and seizures as well as multiple fractures to
the legs. Unfortunately, the baby succumbed to his injuries after being removed from life support.
At this time, the young parents are under investigation. Our department became involved with the
family after Paradise Police Department detained the baby while in the hospital.
Child Welfare did open an investigation to ensure the safety and well-being of another child (14
years of age) that resides in the grandparent’s home where the young parents had been living prior
to the infant’s death.
Since the passing of the infant, we have enacted our child death policy and have provided crisis
debriefing for involved staff as well as an After Action Review will be completed in the coming week.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Shelby Boston, MSW
