HomeMy WebLinkAbout21-029Resolution No. 21-029 WHEREAS, women are 50.3% of the U.S. population; earn more than 57% of undergraduate degrees, 59% of all master's degrees, 48.5% of all |avv degrees; 47.596 of all medical degrees; 38% of Master of Business Administration degrees; 4996 of specialized master's degrees; and account for 4796 of the U.S. labor force and 52.5Y6 of the college- educated workforce; and WHEREAS, women represent only 27% of members of Congress; hold only 28% of seats in State legislaturesB1% in California); represent only 29% all Supervisor seats in California; represent only 18% of governors and 23% of the mayors mfthe 1QDlargest American cities. Women of color represent less than 9% of the members of Congress, represent 2% of governors ainWonly 1U96nfthe mayors ofthe natiVn'm1OOlargest cities, Only 21out ofl93countries have female heads of state; only 14out of1B3countries have 5096women imtheir national cabinets; and only 4out of193countries have 50%women [ntheir national legislatures; and WHEREAS, Butte County was incorporated as one of California's 19 original counties on February 18,1850 —more than 17Oyears ago; and WHEREAS, Butte County convened its Court of Sessions (pre -cursor to the Board of Supervisors) and elected or appointed 3-5male members from 18S5 through 1078before switching toDistrict elections in1882when five members were elected — one imeach ofthe geographic Districts oƒthe county; and WHEREAS, the first of only nine women ever elected to the Butte County Board of Supervisors was seated in 1976 — the Centennial of our Nation and 126 years after Butte County's incorporation. Bertha Moseley ofThermna|itowas that woman. She had been a resident of Butte County for more than 53 years by her second term in 1980, having come from Oklahoma in 1927. Described as a staunch supporter ofagriculture, she reported,|yvvas available to residents ofthe Gdd|ey-0iggmareaemdDurhammareaonedayeachvveekxmshecmu|d"fuNynepresent"aHtheresidentsmfDistrict/; and WHEREAS, two women were elected in close elections just two short years later in 1978 —Jane Dolan, in District 3, who came into office at the age of 29 and went on to win seven more elections. 0m|om served one of the longest Supervisor tenures in Butte County and California history - 32 years. She's most often associated with the Greenline, which prohibits urban sprawl onto the rich farmlands west of Chico, which she conceived and was able to pass in 1982 when a thnaa-wmnoam majority sat on the board. This was the only three -woman majority in Butte's history—and lasted for two years. Dolan was a force behind the creation of the county transit system. She also organized and pushed through the Chapman -Mulberry Neighborhood Plan, and advocated tohave sewer lines put into that area.
