HomeMy WebLinkAbout21-054WHEREAS each year, America sets aside a week to salute the men and women who do the difficult, dangerous, and often thankless work of safeguarding our communities. Our Nation's peace officers embody the very idea of cit|zensh|p-thataUonguwbh our rights come responsibilities, both toourselves and to others. During Peace Officers K4ennmria| Day and Police Week, we celebrate those who protect and serve us every minute of every day, and we honor the courageous officers who devoted themselves so fully to others that in the process they laid down their lives; and WHEREAS, in 1962, the members of Congress signed a joint resolution recognizing May 15ofeach year esPeace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week of each year during which such May 15 occurs as Police Week to honor law enforcement officers killed imthe Une-of-dut5and WHEREAS, as we mourn the fallen, |e1 us also remember how they lived. With unwavering commitment, they defended our schools and businesses. They guarded prisons; patrolled borders; and kept mssafe athome, oothe road, and as we went about our lives. To their families, we owe an unpayable debt, and to the men and women who carry their mission forward, xveowe our unyielding support; and WHEREAS, in 2020 14 California peace officers died in the |Kme-of-dutyand 295 officers died nationally while protecting their communities, 182 of which were COV]D'19 related. The 14 California officers will be memorialized in Sacramento, and the 295 officers killed will be memorialized in Washington D.C. These memorial ceremonies are atime to rememberour indebtedness to the brave and dedicated peace officerswho, accept a jobthat is difficult and dangerous; and WHEREAS, as a symbol of respect and remembrance to those who have laid down their lives in the |ima of duty and e show ofour support tu Uavv enforcement officers working to protect our ounonnum0des, blue ribbons are flown on personal cars and patrol cars during Police Week; and WHEREAS, inafour-year time span, the Butte County Sheriff's Office lost three depilutiesimthe line -of duty, all to gunfire, Deputy Randy Jennings in 1997 and Deputy Bill Hunter and Lieutenant Larry Estes in 2001. Also killed inthe line ofduty were Deputy Constable A.DMiner im1934,Sheriff Alvin Kisterim1937,and Deputy Charles Brown ]rin1959. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby proclaim May 15, 2021 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week of May 9 through May 15, 202, as Police Week in Butte County.
