Have a nice day! Miranda FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 9, 2021 CONTACT Christina Buck Assistant Director, Department of Water and Resource Conservation (530) 552.3593 TOWN HALL MEETING TO BE HELD AT 7PM ON JUNE 15, AT THE PALERMO GRANGE Please join Supervisor Bill Connelly and the Butte County Department of Water and Resource Conservation for a Town Hall Meeting about: EffortstoPursueTreatedDrinkingWaterforthePalermoCommunity Tuesday, June 15, 2021 7 pm Palermo Grange 7600 Irwin Ave, Palermo, CA 95968 Palermo, CA-- The Palermo area has poor drainage resulting in contamination of drinking water in many households served by private wells. A plan to provide clean, reliable drinking water has been developed. To complete the project, Butte County is pursuing grant funding that would connect households in Palermo to South Feather Water and Power to provide a clean and reliable source of drinking water to residents. Supervisor Bill Connelly invites you to a meeting to talk about the Palermo Clean Water Project. The meeting will describe the scope of the project, and strategies for funding it. Additionally, the projects needs help from the community to conduct an additional water quality survey from household wells to update the data on the presence of contaminated drinking water. The last results were from a 2007 survey of septic systems and household wells in Palermo. The 2007 study showed elevated levels of coliform and nitrates in drinking water and storm water drains in the area. The voluntary survey took place within the area enclosed by Messina Avenue to the North, South Villa Avenue to the South, the railroad to the West and Upper Palermo Road to the East as shown on the attached map. The goal would be to resample as many of the 33 households that were originally sampled in 2007 as possible. The blind sampling approach would protect homeowner’s privacy while providing the data needed to compile a strong grant application for the project. “Contaminated drinking water in Palermo is a health and safety concern that can be addressed at little cost to the homeowner by tapping into local water supplies available through South Feather Water and Power. It’s a relatively simple solution that could solve a real problem,” said Butte County Supervisory Bill Connelly. The town hall meeting will provide an overview of the project and seek volunteers for additional water quality sampling to update the demonstrated need to address drinking water quality in Palermo. Come join this very important public meeting regarding efforts to bring clean drinking water to the Palermo community.
