"InSeptember2016,Gov.JerryBrownsignedSenateBill1383, requiringorganicwasteinCalifornialandfillstobereducedby50% by2020and75%by2025.Thisbillisthemostsignificantwaste reductionmandatetobeadoptedinCaliforniainthelast30years andfocusesonreducingorganicwastesuchasfoodwaste,green wasteandpaperproducts. Thestatemustreduceorganicwastedisposalbymorethan20 milliontonsannuallyby2025.Ontopoftheserequirements,SB 1383mandatesthatby2025atleast20%ofediblefoodcurrently senttolandfillsinsteadbecollectedandredistributedforhuman consumption.Foodwastealonecomprises18%ofwhatwedispose andcouldbebetterservedtohelpfeedthoseinneed. CalRecycle isinchargeofadoptingtheregulationssetforthbySB 1383inordertoachievethesetargets,reducemethaneemissions andsupportthestate’sclimatechangegoalsoverall.Toachieve thesegoals,it’scrucialforallresidences,businessandlocal,state andfederalgovernmententitiestoactivelyparticipateinorganic materialcollectionprograms.
