Board Members,
Last week you asked about the status of the Bird Street property in Oroville, previously the Bird
Street Elementary School, which was offered for sale early last year.
General Services navigated the process in partnership with the Department of Employment and
Social Services and there were three aspects that made acquisition problematic:
First, the desire of the School District to dispose of the property quickly did not mesh well with the
time the County required to establish partnerships and plans to implement something that may
benefit the community.
Second, the overall condition of the property in terms of deferred maintenance and configuration /
floorplans would have resulted in repairs and remodel costs that would have exceed the benefit to
the County if acquired.
Finally, it became clear that while the property was surplus to the needs of the school district, other
educational entities wanted the property. Given the need within the educational community, plus
the less-than-ideal condition of the property and the timelines involved, we did not pursue the
facility further.
