The all-volunteer Butte County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team was formed in 1961,
and for the past 60 years has been helping the people of Butte County and saving lives.
th
To celebrate this important milestone, the team will be hosting a 60
Anniversary
th
Celebration event on Sunday, August 29, from 11am to 2pm, at the Chico Elks Lodge,
1705 Manzanita Avenue, Chico, CA.
This event will be held in the grass area in the rear of the facility, and there will be
displays of our rescue equipment and demonstrations of our team’s technical rescue
capabilities for the public to enjoy. Special programs for the kids will include coloring
tables, tours of the equipment (most likely including a helicopter or two), and the
opportunity to see and practice some of the skills necessary to become a Search and
Rescue volunteer. There is also a very strong possibility that the team’s latest acquisition,
a brand new SJX 2170 Tunnel Hull jet boat designed for extreme low water rescue
operations will be available for viewing.
Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea is scheduled to speak at 12:00 pm, and this will be
followed by a short demonstration of the team’s Helicopter Rescue capability (subject to
helicopter and pilot availability). Lunch will be available for purchase at the Elks Club
BBQ area, including hamburgers and hotdogs.
The Butte County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team is an IRS recognized 501 (c) 3 non-
profit organization that works under the authority and direction of the Butte County
Sheriff. Our Search and Rescue Volunteers are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Team members respond to many different types of incidents, including searches for lost
or missing persons, technical/over the edge rescues, air rescues, swift water and dive
rescues, mountain and remote area rescues, wildland fire and flood evacuations, as well
as providing technical assistance to local law enforcement agencies. We serve the entire
Butte County area, including the incorporated City(s) upon request, at no charge. We also
respond outside of Butte County to assist other Counties under California’s Mutual Aid
system.
