2021 ASWORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY
WHEREAS, elder and dependent adult abuse ioa serious and growing concern inButte County and itUs|mthe best
interest of everyone in our community to recognize the signs and symptoms of elder and dependent abuse; and
WHEREAS, reports of abuse or exploitation are made daily on elder and dependent adults; and nearly one out mf
five Butte County residents, are age 65 or older and one in seven residents age 18to65 are living with a d|sab�Nity;and
WHEREAS elder and dependent adult abuse may be physical, emotional, sexual, or fiduciary and consist of crimes
that recognize no boundaries ofeconomic, educational, social status, gemder, race, culture, religion, or geographic
location; and current estimates suggest that asfew as one in twenty-four cases mfelder and dependent adult abuse is
reported; and
WHEREAS elders who experience abuse or mistreatment face a greater risk ofimpacting the health care and
social service systems; and
WHEREAS, social isolation is a major cause of elder abuse and, neglect in the United States; and over one imevery
eight households in Butte County is a resident age 65 or older living alone with an increased risk for isolation; and
WHEREAS, preventing abuse of older adults through maintaining and improving social supports like senior
centers, human services, housing related assistance and transportation will allow everyone to continue To live as
independently aapossible; and
WHEREAS, elder and dependent adults deserve to be treated with respect and dignity to enable them toserve, as
leaders, mentors, volunteers, and vital participating members ufour communities. Through education, recognition and
reporting, we can make a difference in the lives of elders and dependent adults around the state;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors, hereby declare the month of
June 2021 as Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month in Butte County and recognize June 15 as World Elder
Abuse Awareness Day.
