Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Doses
Authorized – Booster Mix-and-Match Approved
BUTTE COUNTY, CA – As of October 22, 2021, the FDA, CDC and The Western States Scientific Safety Review
Workgroup has recommended a COVID-19 booster dose for recipients of the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson
vaccines. Recipients of the Moderna vaccine may receive a booster dose six months after completing their
primary vaccination series, and recipients of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine may receive a booster dose two
months after receiving their first dose.
At this time, booster doses are not required to be considered fully vaccinated, but are encouraged to keep
protection levels against COVID-19 as high as possible.
Booster doses of the Pfizer vaccine was recommended on September 24, 2021.
The Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson booster doses will be the same dosage as the original vaccine received in the
series. The Moderna booster dose will be half dosage compared to the original vaccine series.
A Pfizer or Moderna booster dose is recommended if you:
Received your second dose at least six months ago, and
Are 65 or older, or
Age 18+ who live in long-term care settings, or
Age 18+ who have underlying medical conditions, or
Age 18+ who are at increased risk due to social inequity, or
Age 18+ who work or live in high-risk settings
A Johnson & Johnson booster dose is recommended if you:
Received your first dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least 2 months ago, and
Are 18 or older
Mix-and-Match Boosters
A single booster dose of any of the available COVID-19 vaccines may be administered as a mix and match booster
dose following completion of primary vaccination with any approved COVID-19 vaccine, depending on advice
from a health care provider, individual preference, availability, or convenience.
Please note: California’s vaccine scheduling site, MyTurn.ca.gov does not offer the ability to schedule a mixed
dose appointment at this time. For those wishing to get different vaccine for their booster dose, residents may
visit any location that currently offers the desired COVID-19 vaccine, including clinics, some pharmacies and
some healthcare providers.

Butte County Public Health vaccination clinics are always voluntary. BCPH strongly urges everyone who is eligible
to get fully vaccinated, but does not mandate anyone to get vaccinated.
