Miranda FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 26, 2021 CONTACT Louie B. Mendoza, Jr. Butte County Agricultural Commissioner 530-552-4100 2020 Butte County Crop & Livestock Report Butte County’s gross value for agricultural production in 2020 was $625,384,709 – representing a decrease of almost $63 million from the previous year. Rice, Almonds, Walnuts (English) and Prunes led the way for 2020 crop values. Rice was the number one crop valued at $179 million; Almonds came in as the number two crop at $147 million; Walnuts were the number three crop at $128 million followed by Prunes at almost $29 million. “Butte County crop production value was down 9% overall in 2020 compared to 2019. The largest decrease was in Walnut values due to a decrease in bearing acreage, yields, and price per ton that resulted in a decrease of $86 million from the previous year. The rice industry saw a slight increase in value per ton, which resulted in a $13 million increase from the previous year. Increased yields for almonds resulted in an increase of $6.7 million. Additionally, we did see an increase of $4 million for our prune industry in 2020”. Agriculture is still the number one industry in Butte County and contributes to our economy in the form of employment, labor income and value added,” said Butte County Agricultural Commissioner Louie Mendoza. “About one in five jobs in our area is attributed to agriculture.” Butte County’s Agricultural impacts go far beyond the orchards, fields, farmers and farm workers. Each dollar earned within agriculture fuels a more vigorous economy by stimulating additional activity in the form of jobs, labor income and value added such as generating business in banking, marketing, transportation, and other \[1\] services. The contribution of agriculture accounts for nearly 1.7 million jobs (7%) in California. Butte County agricultural exports to other countries remained consistent in 2020. Export destinations range from Afghanistan to Viet Nam, with 63 countries and 23 U.S. states importing Butte County agricultural products. Indications at this point are that the number of agricultural exports will continue to stay resilient as products remain in demand. The figures presented in this report are estimated gross values with no consideration of production costs and do not reflect net income to producers.
