HomeMy WebLinkAbout11.4.21 For Immediate Release_ Butte County to Open Pfizer Vaccinations for Children 5-11 Years of Age From:Almaguer, Lisa To:BOS; Cox, Erin; McSpadden, Elaine; Nicholas, Jodi; Putnam, Jodi; Soderstrom, Monica; Star, Nanette Cc:York, Danette Subject:For Immediate Release: Butte County to Open Pfizer Vaccinations for Children 5-11 Years of Age Date:Thursday, November 4, 2021 7:34:54 AM The following press release will be issued shortly… FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 4, 2021 Butte County to Open Pfizer Vaccinations for Children 5-11 Years of Age Following FDA Emergency Use Authorization, Federal and State Safety Review Experts Recommend the Vaccine as Safe and Effective for Protecting Young People BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Center for Disease Control Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Western States Science Safety Review Workgroup have authorized the emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for the prevention of COVID-19 to include children 5 through 11 years of age. This expanded eligibility for ages 5-11 is effective immediately. Parents and legal guardians should talk with their child’s doctor or visit one of the following websites to find a vaccine provider in Butte County. At this time, not all COVID-19 vaccine locations will be able to offer vaccinations for young children. Call the Butte County COVID-19 Call Center: 530-552-3050 Residents ages 5 and older must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine for children 5 through 11 years of age is administered as a two-dose primary series, 3 weeks apart, but is a lower dose (10 micrograms) than that used for individuals 12 years of age and older (30 micrograms). In the U.S., COVID-19 cases in children 5 through 11 years of age make up 39% of cases in individuals younger than 18 years of age. According to the CDC, approximately 8,300 COVID-19 cases in children 5 through 11 years of age resulted in hospitalization. As of Oct. 17, 691 deaths from COVID-19 have been reported in the U.S. in individuals less than 18 years of age, with 146 deaths in the 5 through 11 years age group. Butte County Public Health (BCPH) vaccination clinics are always voluntary.
