Did you know that Help Me Grow Butte offers free developmental screenings
for children under 5?Developmental screenings measure how a child learns,
speaks, moves, behaves, and relates. They can help identify children at risk for
developmental problems. Screenings don’t diagnose a child with a disability.
But, it may suggest the need for some further evaluation.
Early screening and detection gives children the best possible start in life.

Help Me Grow Butte Overview
Help Me Grow Butte is excited to share this new video created to help
everyone understand how we can help! Check it out and help spread the word!
School is in season and checking in with your preschooler after school can be
a fun way to build your child's communication skills and learn more about the
world that surrounds them! Here are some fun and great conversation starters
to get your preschoolers thinking and talking about their day.
Here are 10 conversation starters to get your preschooler talking:
1.Tell me about the best part of your day.
2.What was the hardest thing you had to do today?
3.Did any of your classmates do anything funny?
4.Tell me about what you read in class.
5.Who did you play with today? What did you play?
6.Do you think math \[or any subject\] is too easy or too hard?
7.What's the biggest difference between this year and last year?
8.What rules are different at school than our rules at home? Do you think
they're fair?
9.Who did you sit with at lunch?
10.Can you show me something you learned (or did) today?
Remember, moving beyond words like "fine" and "nothing" and asking open-
ended questions encourages children to think critically about their day, explore
other words to describe their interactions with their peers and teachers and
focus on highlights of the school day to support both their emotional and
cognitive growth.
Wildfires and other natural disasters can create real challenges for parents and
families when discussing what's happened and how to move forward?
Although these can be very difficult conversations to have with a child, they are
also equally important to your child's wellbeing.
For example, to address children’s reactions during a wildfire, parents and
caregivers can:
Model calm behavior. Children may mirror the reactions of adults around
them and will learn ideas for how to take care of themselves from what
parents and caregivers do.
Provide simple but accurate information in a quiet, steady voice. Tell
children that the firefighters are working hard to put out the fire. This
helps reassure them that adults are actively taking steps to protect them,
their home, and their neighborhood. Also make sure they understand that
fires can burn for several days to weeks but this doesn’t mean that their
home is always in danger. Help them to understand when the fire is
contained.
Encourage comforting or distracting activities. Children may benefit from
doing slow breathing to calm their bodies or having a stuffed animal or
blanket to hold. As outside activity will be limited for a period of time,
have them think of activities that don’t exert much physical effort, such as
board games, reading, or building a puzzle.
Practice their own self-care. Parents and caregivers may benefit from
finding opportunities to take a moment for themselves, express their
feelings, acknowledge that it is a scary situation, and engage in a coping
strategy.
