Board members and CAO,
I know several of us have been receiving emails from parents, coaches, superintendents, etc.
regarding allowing testing instead of masking for basketball players. I have researched the issue and
worked with CDPH whose requirement statement is “Masks are required for all persons while
playing all indoor sports, unless wearing a mask during play has been determined to pose a choking
hazard by a well-recognized health authority, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics.\[1\]”
In working with CDPH I have learned that a local health jurisdiction is a “well recognized health
authority”. I has spoken with Dr. Canton and we both agree that playing basketball with a mask on
could pose a choking hazard, but more importantly (in our opinion) could lead to other types of
injuries. Therefore, later today or tomorrow at the latest, BCPH will send a statement to BCOE and
all Superintendents allowing testing in lieu of masking for indoor basketball. The statement is not
finalized yet but I will send you a copy as soon as it is so you can then share with your constituents
who are emailing you about this issue.
