FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Winter Travel Advisory
for December 21 - 27, 2021
REDDING – The National Weather Service is forecasting more significant
winter weather for the Northern California area, starting Tuesday and lasting
through the holiday weekend, with multiple rounds of rain, wind, and heavy
mountain snow. Lower elevation snow is also a possibility during this time, as
snow levels are forecasted to continue to drop throughout the week and into
the weekend/early next week. Motorists should plan for chain controls in higher
elevations and are advised to check weather and roadway conditions prior to
and during breaks in travel.
Higher elevation travel is extremely discouraged during this upcoming winter
weather pattern. Motorists who must travel into higher elevations must carry
chains, be prepared for winter driving conditions, expect delays and possible
closures, and follow instructions of Caltrans personnel and law
enforcement. Motorists who do not comply with chain controls endanger their
own safety and the safety of other motorists around them, along with
jeopardizing our vital maintenance operations. Truck and/or vehicle screening
is anticipated for northbound Interstate 5 traffic at Fawndale Road,
approximately ten miles north of Redding, prior to or during the
storms. Motorists are also reminded to be cognizant when traveling in recent
burn scar areas as significant rain is also expected at lower elevations during
this weather pattern.
For more information, please contact the District 2 Public Information Office
during business hours at (530) 225-3426 or via email. 24/7 updated highway
conditions are available via QuickMap (also available by free app for
smartphones), One-Stop-Shop (Western U.S.), or through the Caltrans
Highway Information Network by calling 1-800-427-7623. Motorists can also
follow Caltrans District 2 on our Twitter and Facebook pages for important
traffic updates.
