Continued Bridge Joint Emergency Work
On Interstate 5 at Cottonwood Creek Bridge
December 16, 2021
Caltrans District 2 and Golden State Bridge, Inc. are planning to continue the repairs
and replacement of modular bridge joints on sections of the Cottonwood Creek Bridge
on Interstate 5 near the Tehama/Shasta County line tomorrow. Grinding, profile, and
polyester concrete work were conducted at the location on Tuesday.
th
Beginning Friday, December 17 at 7:30 a.m., motorists should again plan for the
closure of the northbound #1 lane near the bridge location and the northbound on
ramp from Bowman Road. This lane and ramp closure will continue 24-hours a
day until modular bridge joint replacement is completed on the northbound #1
lane at the bridge location. While this work will be completed as quickly as
possible, these lane and ramp closures may last through the weekend. This
emergency work needs to be conducted during this brief, clear weather window
before more inclement weather arrives in the area.
Motorists should plan for lengthy delays on northbound I-5 in the area while this
lane closure is in place. Travelers are urged to stay on the interstate and not
utilize surface roads in order to bypass construction efforts and traffic delays.
Median turnaround areas are for official personnel only. Motorists can
tentatively plan for approximately 1/2 hour delays when the traffic backups are to
Sunset Hills Drive, and approximately 1 hour delays when backups are to
Wilcox/Jellys Ferry Road areas. Delays may be longer if traffic incidents are
associated.
24/7 highway conditions, including areas of road work and traffic delays, can be found
on QuickMap. Information and updates can also be found on the District 2 Facebook
and Twitter pages, as well as our website. Motorists are urged to slow down, plan for
delays, and drive slowly and carefully when approaching the area and while in the
traffic queue.
Within the coming months, similar operations will take place on the northbound #2,
southbound #1, and southbound #2 lanes on the bridge. This work and scheduling are
subject to change at any time. Caltrans and contractor are exploring all possibilities for
work windows in upcoming operations, including night work when feasible per
operations.
Thank you for your understanding as these vital repairs are made at the bridge
location. Please contact District 2 at 530-225-3426 or by email with questions.
