Board members,
Earlier this morning, many County Internet users experienced a significant slowdown. It turned out
that a Microsoft update took up half of the County’s 1 gig bandwidth. When we discovered this, we
slowed down the Microsoft update, so County Internet users could go about their business.
Over the years, as the demand for data increased, County IS has had to managed the Internet traffic
through various tactics. Examples include installing updates and routing data-intense traffic during
non-business hours. However, as we have more employees working remotely, and the need for data
increases exponentially, we will need to eventually increase “pipe size” or bandwidth from 1 gig to 5-
10 gigs. Meanwhile, we will actively manage traffic to ensure best experience for end users.
