The fire exploded burning over 200,000 acres in a matter of a few short hours. An eight-mile wide fire front bore down on northeastern Butte County burning over 70,000 acres. Due to the speed and magnitude of the fire, firefighters spent Tuesday evening and into Wednesday morning engaged in lifesaving and evacuation operations. Firefighters rescued more than 100 residents throughout the day and overnight as the fire did major damage to the communities of Berry Creek, Feather Falls, Brush Creek and others, and continues to be a threat to surrounding areas, including the city of Oroville. This fire has only been burning for the last 3 days and is still very active, now more than ever is the time to be vigilant. The weather continues to work in the firefighters favor with decreased winds, lower temperatures, and higher humidities, allowing crews to aggressively fight fire and develop further containment lines. However the lack of visibility continues to be a factor, as heavy smoke in the area of the fire hampers the ability of aircraft to fight the fire from above. Firefighters will continue to strengthen fire lines and extinguish interior hot spots to protect threatened population centers. CAL FIRE Damage Assessment Teams will be in the fire area today and for several days after documenting the destroyed and damaged structures within the fire area. Weather: Today: Widespread haze. Areas of smoke. Partly sunny, with a high near 88. Calm wind becoming south southeast around 5 mph in the afternoon. Tonight: Widespread haze. Areas of smoke. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 65. Light and variable wind becoming east 5 to 7 mph after midnight. Saturday: Widespread haze. Areas of smoke. Partly sunny, with a high near 91. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph in the afternoon.
