State Route 70 Slide Update
January 6, 2022
State Route 70 remains closed between Jarbo Gap and the Greenville Wye due to the
slide near the Butte/Plumas County Line. Following a brief reopening in early
December, the area has remained closed due to continued slide activity and inclement
weather.
Following recent geotechnical evaluation, Caltrans and contractors began scaling
operations from above via helicopter yesterday. Following scaling operations, debris
removal and roadway repairs are planned in the slide area. While there is no concrete
ETO, Caltrans and contractors are anticipating, pending weather or further slide
activity, to have the route reopened by late next week.
Motorists are reminded that the slide location has experienced multiple periods of
activity since the initial event and more inclement, winter weather is expected in the
coming months. Motorists should also be cognizant of burn scar areas along State
Route 70 from the Dixie Fire and possible effects from inclement weather periods.
Dixie Fire emergency work also continues at various locations in the State Route 70
corridor by Caltrans and our contractors, along with permitted work for PG&E, utility
companies, and other agencies. When the route is reopened to through traffic,
motorists should plan for 30-60 minute delays on SR 70 between Jarbo Gap and
Quincy, Mondays-Saturdays during daytime hours, along with minor delays on
Sundays. This work and scheduling are weather dependent and subject to change at
any time.
Caltrans and contractors thank the traveling public and locals for their continued
patience during this slide closure. 24/7 roadway conditions are available
via QuickMap. Please contact the Caltrans District 2 Public Information Office at 530-
225-3426 with questions.
