we serve; and
WHEREAS, President Lyndon B. Johnson first proclaimed National Hispanic Heritage Week on September 17,1968,
inrecognition ofHispanic contributions to American culture and history; and was expanded by President Reagan in 1988
to cover a 30 -day period starting on September 15, the, United States observes Hispanic Heritage Month; and
WHEREAS, the objectives of National Hispanic Heritage Month are to create a greater awareness of Hispanic
contributions to American, culture, to illustrate the diversity of the Hispanic uomnmunity, and to, encourage a greater
curiosity within young people about the rich history and cultural heritage of Hispain,ic heritage; and
WHEREAS, the Hispanic influence is evident in American culture whether it is in the area of mu -sic, arts, sciences,
food, humanities, orbusiness and trade; and
WHEREAS, Hispanic individuals from the Revolutionary Warto the War on Terror have proudly served this country
in the Armed Forces, and during their course of service, more than 60 Hispan,ic soldiers, including 12 from California, have
been awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest honor conferred for military bravery; and
WHEREAS, there are more than 36,000 people of Hispanic heritage living in Butte County; and
WHEREAS, Hispanic people have contributed tothe development and success ofCalifornia and the United States
by playing significant roles in building our nation through agriculture, medicine, science, entertainment, business,
educatimm,politics, and sports.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors that Butte County declare September 15 to
October 15, 2021, to be Hispanic Heritage Month, and encourages the celebration of this event in communities throughout
the County; and urge all residents to learn more about the cultures, people, traditions and values that have positively
enriched our community.
