Chief Sjolund has served as the Assistant Chief in the Butte Unit since 2016 and has held many other positions in the Butte Unit throughout his career. Chief Garrett Sjolund began his CAL FIRE career in 1996. He has worked in the Mendocino Unit, Butte Unit, Tehema-Glenn Unit and Sacramento Headquarters – Tactical Air Operations. He has held the classifications of Firefighter 1, Fire Apparatus Engineer, Fire Captain and Battalion Chief working in various programs to include Fire Stations (State and Contract), Helitack, Air Attack, Fire Crews and Administration. In 2016, Chief Sjolund was promoted to Assistant Chief in the Butte Unit. As an Assistant Chief, he managed the Unit’s Training, Safety & EMS Bureau, Chico Air Attack Base, Magalia Fire Center, and North Unit Operations. During this assignment, he oversaw State Operations, portions of Butte County Fire Department and Town of Paradise cooperative fire protection agreements. In 2021, Chief Sjolund promoted to Deputy Chief of Operations in the Butte Unit. Chief Sjolund served on several Statewide instructional cadres, working groups, and program development. Sjolund served as lead instructor for the California Aerial Supervision Academy, and worked to develop the Department’s first Helitack Fire Captain Academy. He served as a charter member of the Statewide Training Committee and was instrumental in the development of the CAL FIRE Fire Crew 6300 handbook. Chief Sjolund was a member of CAL FIRE Incident Management Team 3 from 2009-2013 and continues to hold qualifications as an Air Operations Branch Director and Air Tactical Supervisor. Chief Sjolund attended both Butte College and Chico State, and since 2007 has served as an instructor at the Butte College Fire Academy. Mike Richwine California State Fire Marshal / Acting Director
