Parking Prohibition.pdf FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEMarch 16, 2022 CONTACTTerry Edwards, Assistant DirectorButte County Public Works(530) 538-7681 PARKING PROHIBITION ON CHEROKEE ROAD In the interest of public safety and accessibility, sightseers exploring the North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve will not be able to park along a portion of Cherokee Road starting this spring. In response to a request made by California Highway Patrol, the Butte County Board of Supervisors adopted an ordinance prohibiting parking along the paved portion of Cherokee Road, beginning approximately 2.9 miles north of the intersection with Oregon Gulch Road (large parking turnout near the crest of Cherokee Road) to 1.28 miles north of its intersection with Derrick Road. Cherokee Road is a narrow rural road that attracts a large number of visitors each year for the scenic and recreational opportunities provided by the North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve. During peak season, overflow parking along this portion of Cherokee Road has created limited visibility and hazardous conditions for bicycles, pedestrians, and motorists. Vehicles parked over the roadway also create a safety hazard by inhibiting the free access of emergency vehicles. During the March 8th Board of Supervisors meeting, Chairman Bill Connelly stated, “I have received many complaints about this area over the years. The road is narrow as it is. Vehicles parking on the paved section of the roadway turn it into a one-lane road. This prohibition is necessary for public safety.” Vehicles parked on the paved portion of Cherokee Road, beginning approximately 3.0 miles north of the intersection of Oregon Gulch Road (large parking turnout near the crest of Cherokee Road) to Derrick Road will be subject to tow.
