On behalf of the Valley Contractors Exchange (VCE), an association of more than 350 construction companies, suppliers, and vendors, we are thrilled to invite you to the June 1st dedication ceremony to celebrate the completion a tiny home built by local high school students for a survivor of the 2020 Bear Fire. The project is part of VCE’s new educational initiative called Hands on Tool Mobile Construction Training, which aims to put tools in the hands of the potential future construction workforce, including local middle and high school students. This project has seriously been a labor of love. What was initially going to be a shed project morphed into a tiny home build after our VCE staff and the Chico High students were connected with Margarita, a Bear Fire survivor, through her Case Manager. Margarita had been living in a FEMA camp for over a year after losing her home to the Bear Fire when our group met to discuss the potential project. After we met with Margarita, we knew we had to take on the challenge. We immediately began lining up industry experts to teach the Chico High students the various trades involved in building a home, including framing, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing. The build from start to finish has taken less than one month. At the beginning, the Chico High students were nervous that maybe they bit off more than they could chew. But after the first day of building, when they were able to raise the framed walls, they started feeling more confident that they could pull it off Approximately 20 students and 26 industry professionals have participated in the build. It has been an incredible community collaboration, with dozens of construction experts donating their time, expertise, and materials to complete this project. The kids have been super enthusiastic, too. I was surprised that they were even asking to build this Saturday, even though it’s prom day! My family lost our home in the 2018 Camp Fire and spent the next two years rebuilding both our home and our neighbor’s home, which was a restorative process for all of us. Through the act of physically rebuilding, we went from feeling helpless and hopeless to feeling empowered. I am so proud of the Chico High team and thrilled that we were able to help Margarita through this critical part of her recovery process. The Tiny Home dedication will take place Wednesday, June 1st at 3:00pm on the Chico High campus, located at 901 Esplanade. We would love to have you there to share in our celebration. This Chico High Tiny Home Project was made possible through the generosity of NorthStar Engineering, R.
