JUNE 15, 2022 ASWORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY
WHEREAS, elder and dependent adult abuse is a serious and growing concern in Butte County and it is in the best
interest ofeveryone inour community t0recognize the signs and symptoms ufelder and dependent abuse; and
WHEREAS, reports of abuse or exploitation are made daily on elder and dependent adults; and abuse may be
physical, emotional, sexual, or fiduciary and consist ofcrimes that recognize no boundaries ofeconomic, educational,
socia | status, gender, race, culture, religion, orgeographic location; and
WHEREAS, for Adult Protective Services in California, elder is now defined as 60 years and older and dependent
adult age 18 to 59 with nearly one out of every four Butte County residents over age 59 and one in eight non -elderly adults
in Butte County living with a disability; and
WHEREAS, elder and dependent adult abuse is significantly under -reported with estimates suggesting that as few
asone imtwenty-four cases ofelder and dependent adult abuse isreported; and
WHEREAS, the costs of abuse can be high and can lead to loss of lives, independence, dignity,homes, life savings
and impact the health care and social service systems; and
WHEREAS, preventing abuse of older adults through, maintaining and improving social supports like senior
centers, human services, housing related assistance and transportation will allow everyone to continue to Ove as
independently aspossible; and
WHEREAS, elder and dependent adults deserve to be treated with respect and dignity to enable them, to serve as
leaders, mentors, volunteers and vital participating members ofour communities, Through education, recognition and
reporting, vvecan make a,differeoce|mtheUvesofe|dersanddependentadu|tsarnumdBwt±eCoumty;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE !TRESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors, hereby declare the month of
June 2022 as Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month in Butte Couinty and recognize June 15,2022asWorld
Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
