Hello Board Members and CAO,
I apologize for the long email but want to share some important information.
Public Health staff have been working with Pediatricians and other Physicians on a messaging
campaign for the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine. This work started before the Emergency Use
Authorization (EUA) was approved for the youngest (under 5) population. With the announcement
of the youngest population EUA this messaging is even more important because we continue to
encourage people to speak with their doctors. I am sure you will hear negative comments about this
messaging so I wanted you to be aware of it ahead of time.
First: the priority has always been and continues to be to encourage parents to speak with and work
with their Pediatrician and/or Family Doctor to determine if the vaccine is appropriate for their child.
Second: we are working with Pediatricians and other Providers to encourage that they provide the
vaccine out of their offices directly to their patients. There is some hesitancy around doing this
because there are some significant logistics around providing the vaccine, such as ordering, storing
and tracking. We have successfully recruited several physicians in the Chico area to provide the
vaccine but are not having much luck in other areas of the county.
Third, we have videos (see links below) that Pediatricians and Doctors made encouraging the public
to talk to their doctors and to get vaccinated. While we (Public Health) have worked with the doctors
to make these videos, the message is from them not from the government. Therefore, there are no
logos or other information regarding Butte County.
Finally, with the Enloe/Butte County Public Health community vaccine clinic closing (ended at the
end of June) and since Public Health clinics are the safety net for those who cannot or will not get
care elsewhere, we will start providing COVID-19 vaccine through our Public Health clinics. We will
only offer it one day a week out of the Oroville Clinic and one day a week out of the Chico Clinic.
Additionally, even though the State does it differently we will not provide any pediatric vaccine
without the parent/guardian being present (in person) to give consent.
Here is the information for the campaign:
In July, the following messaging will begin on various platforms promoting the COVID-19 Pediatric
Vaccine. The campaign is set to run through December. We have the flexibility to update our
messaging at any time during the campaign.
