WHEREAS, elder and dependent adult abuse isaserious crisis inButte County and itisinthe best interest ofeveryone in
our community to recognize the signs and symptoms of elder and dependent abuse; and
WHEREAS, daily reports of abuse or exploitation are made on elder and dependent adults; and abuse may be physical,
emotional, sexual, or fiduciary and consist of crimes that recognize no boundaries of economic, educational, soc�al
status, gender, race, culture, religion, or geographic location; and
WHEREAS, the National Center omElder Abuse reports 1in10Americans over the age of6Oexperience some type of
abuse, but only 1 in every 24 cases is reported; and
WHEREAS, the 2023 Elder and Dependent Abuse Awareness Month theme, "Cailifornia's Response to Homelessness in
Older Adults and People with 0sabOities~,highlights thegrmvvngmateufoUderanddependentadu|tsw/hoame
experiencing, homelessness and emphasizes the need for increased efforts to address the causes of abuse and housing
instability for this atrisk population; and
WHEREAS, financial insecurity is a fundamental cause of homelessness and reports of financial abuse and exploitation
account for 36%ofall reports received imButte County, with that percentage increaisimgimeach ofthe last three years;
and
WHEREAS, the costs of abuse can be high and can lead to loss of lives, independence, dignity, homes, life savings and
impact the health care and social service systems;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors, here,by declare the month of June 2023
emElder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month imButte County and recognize June 15,2B23 asWorld Elder
Abuse Awareness Day.
