Attached is a letter from the Butte County Federal State Land Use Coordinating Committee, expressing support for the planned fuels reduction projects within Butte County on BLM Lands. We’re writing to let you know that, while Butte County did not have the capacity to analyze the Environmental Assessment document and provide comment, we are supportive of fuels reduction projects on BLM lands within the County. Private citizens have expressed concern over the past several years regarding dead or dying stands of timber on BLM lands adjacent to their properties. Fire damage from the 2017 and 2018 fires has exacerbated this situation. We are pleased to see the BLM partnering with the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve (BCCER) and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), to implement hazard fuels reduction and prescribed burn operations, described as: Two strategic locations within Butte County: Three BLM parcels adjacent to the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve near the community of Forest Ranch in the Big Chico Creek drainage, as well as on two BLM parcels near Phoenix Hill, just south of Lake Wyandotte along Forbestown Road, near the communities of Oroville and Hurleton. Both areas have experienced wildfires within the Treatment implementation at these locations would consist of mechanical and manual thinning of vegetation combined with prescribed burning. We agree with the premise that these treatments should reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire by reintroducing fire at intensities and return intervals that promote ecological function and productivity, meet multiple resource management objectives, and protect adjacent values at risk. Thank you for your partnership and collaboration on these projects within Butte County. We are hopeful that these are just the first of such projects on BLM lands. Sincerely, Peggy MoakSpecial Projects Butte County Federal/State Land Use Coordinating Committee Butte County Forest Advisory Committee 25 County Center Drive, Suite 213, Oroville, CA 95965 M: 530.370.2933 pmoak@buttecounty.net Twitter | Facebook | YouTube | Pinterest
