The request for classifying the site soil was initiated by the Butte County Building Department by their letter to you dated February 25, 1998. Our representative met with Mr. handy Haliwall of NTmRite Masonry at the site on March 9, 1998. Three samples of the soil within the top 1 foot of the site were obtained and returned to our Redding Office laboratory for classification testing. Our engineering technician visually Classified the soil in the top 2/3 foot as silty sand with gravel which appeared to be fill. Beneath this surficial layer, the soil to a depth of 1 foot was visually classified as a clayey sand with gavel. Laboratory tests including gradation analysis and Atterberg limits (American Society for Testing and Materials D-422. and D4318) were performed on a sample of the material encountered from 2/3 to 1 foot since it appeared to contain clay. Tile laboratory tests results on this material indicated that the soil contained 22 percent gravel, 38 percent sand, and 40 percent fines (minus No. 200 sieve size). The liquid limit and plasticity index of the materials was 27 and 8, respectively. Using ASTM D-2487 for laboratory soil classification, the subject soil was classified as a clayey sand with gravel. As classified the soils observed in the top 1 foot of the site comply with the Class 4 material type identified in Table 184-A of the 1994 Uniform Building Code. Soil classifications presented in this letter are based on our field observations and limited subsurWe explorations and Un-Ated laboratory tests.
