This is the day the world paid attention and stood up on behalf of the Jewish people as an ally. On this day, 79 years ago, the world stepped in to flag and shine a light on hatred and intolerance. We do this not only to remember, but to learn from the past so that we can prevent future acts of evil and genocide; and WHEREAS, Yom HaShoah (falling in April or May each year), is a day of communal mourning in the Jewish community for the lives lost during the Holocaust, International Holocaust Remembrance Day is one of education and awareness building for the whole world; and WHEREAS, recent data shows an alarming rise in antisemitism. Jewish people make up 2.4%of the U.S. population but are the targets of 60% of hate crimes linked to religion, and antisemitic acts have increased 388% compared to 2022. A report from December 2023 shows a 700% increase in antisemitic incidents on college campuses, compared with the same period in 2022; and WHEREAS, a recent poll showed that 1 out of 5 of those who are 18-29 years old believes the Holocaust is a myth and therefore International Holocaust Remembrance Day is an important time to educate and raise awareness to combat antisemitism and intolerance of all kinds; and WHEREAS, Butte County condemns antisemitism and is committed to preventing acts of hatred and intolerance in all forms; and WHEREAS, educating the public about the history of antisemitism and persecution of all minority groups is an important step in providing accurate information and creating a climate of mutual respect and understanding; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors recognizes January 27th as International Holocaust Remembrance Day and calls on all citizens of Butte County to pause and remember victims and survivors of the Holocaust, to learn from its immense tragedy, to identify and oppose all expressions of antisemitism, and to stand in solidarity with all people and groups who experience intolerance and hatred.
