I would like to echo the commendation of librarians and library workers.
As information increasingly moves online and search algorithms
increasingly direct users toward misleading or meaningless hokum,
trained professionals are invaluable for helping people find the
information they seek, be it on screen or on paper. We all understand
the value of library facilities themselves, and yet the dozens of Butte
County Library branches once found throughout the SRA remain defunct. A
modern-day bookmobile including a few computers and a hotspot would
provide many of the enumerated benefits, perhaps one day per week in
each of several rural communities where the Digital Divide is its worst.
I will pause at our long-gone library and reflect. But yes, celebrate
those libraries that remain so those communities realize their value.
