Considering the ongoing budget process, I wanted to call to attention the "continued difficulty recruiting and
retaining licensed civil engineers" specified in this staff report. Just as we need to offer our deputies competitive
wages to keep positions filled and minimize overtime, we also need to make competitive offers to engineers and
other highly educated professionals. Otherwise we end up paying private-sector prices plus indirect costs and fees.
Better to have someone on staff to help out Bill and Kim.
I hope the budget presentation to the Board and public spells out where the Services & Supplies dollars have been
going and how many budgeted positions remain unfilled.
