Thank You for all that You do in strengthening our communities. At CSAC, we celebrate public services this year featuring county leaders from Humboldt, Fresno, Mariposa, Monterey, and Riverside. A mission-driven professional motivated by the higher purpose of the work, today we celebrate Leigh Westerlund, a superstar from Mariposa County. Join us for a short interview. Leigh Westerlund Assistant Chief Administrative Officer, Mariposa County. How do you explain to others what you do? I have two primary areas of responsibility - financial management and financial system (Oracle Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)) implementation and support. Ultimately my job is to manage Mariposa County resources equitably, objectively, and responsibly to ensure we deliver the best services possible to the community. What drew you to public service? I am a mission-driven professional and I am motivated by the higher purpose of the work. When we implemented the ERP, we named it "The Enterprise" after the Star Trek series. Our tagline was "Boldly going where no Mariposa County employee has gone before," and I put the project goals on the back of Star Trek playing cards and passed them out to staff. This is why we undertook that project: · Streamline, simplify, and standardize business processes. · Focus data on one version of the truth - integrate or eliminate redundant systems. · Enhance working relationships with staff and community through accessibility and accuracy of information. · Inform decisions with data analysis. · Ultimately improve the quality and quantity of the community services we provide. The way I see it, local governments exist to do what is right on behalf of the community as a whole, and I am excited to be a part of that. What’s the best piece of advice that you ever received? This is such a good question. I have collected lots of advice over the years: 1. Success or failure of any endeavor can always be traced to the leader. This one requires a longer explanation...worth a quick conversation. 2. I never got anywhere looking in the rearview mirror. 3. Stand up for what is right. 4. Take care of yourself. Not in an “aww take care of yourself way”, but in a “take care of yourself, dammit!” way. No one else will and you are your own best advocate. 5. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, be afraid of people who cannot admit they have made mistakes. 6. Surround yourself with people who are smarter, better, more knowledgeable than you are. Three A’s: What’s your favorite Artist, Attraction, and Appetizer? 1. This is tough. I am surrounded by musical artists, but I cannot name one favorite, and I'm hopeless with visual arts. I loved the Van Gogh exhibit. Maybe this is not surprising given my profession? 2. Hiking in the mountains - Yosemite. 3. Fried calamari. ---------- Visit us at CSACInstitute.org   Connect with us   CSAC Institute for Excellence in County Government | 1100 K Street, Suite 101, Sacramento, CA 95814 Unsubscribe clerkoftheboard@buttecounty.net Update Profile | Constant Contact Data Notice Sent by csac@csacinstitute.ccsend.com powered by Try email marketing for free today!
