RE: DeSabla-Centerville Hydroelectric Project, FERC No. 803-CA
Divestiture and Response to FERC’s November 19, 2024
Letter regarding 2023 Butte Canal Incident
Dear Secretary Reese:
On February 18, 2025, Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) filed a letter with the Federal
Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) stating that PG&E did not intend to restore Butte Canal
and would be assessing the specific path forward for the DeSabla-Centerville Project, FERC
No. 803.
This letter provides notification to FERC of PG&E’s intent to reinitiate a sale and transfer of the
DeSabla-Centerville Project through a Request for Offer (RFO) process. We expect the RFO to
launch later this year. PG&E will continue to operate all project assets in compliance with the
current license. PG&E plans for Butte Canal to remain out of service while we move through the
RFO process to determine if there is interest from another party to restore the canal in the
future. Monthly Butte canal inspections will continue to occur throughout the RFO and
divestiture process.
In response to FERC’s November 19, 2024, letter regarding the 2023 canal incidents, PG&E
feels this letter satisfactorily responds to the following request in FERC’s letter:
If applicable, please provide a plan and schedule for bringing the Butte Canal back into
service and for addressing any outstanding canal deficiencies identified during your
monitoring efforts. Alternatively, please indicate your plans for the ultimate disposition of
Butte Canal, or for any plans for filing an amendment to your project license or modifying
your relicense application to remove it from the project. Please provide this information
within 90 days of the date of this letter.
If you have any questions regarding current operations, please contact Sky Ramirez-Doble,
license coordinator for PG&E, at (530) 250-7002. For questions regarding the sale and transfer
of the project please contact, Mike Schonherr, Director of Power Generation Strategy for PG&E,
at (415) 407-5319
Sincerely,
Janet Walther
Director, Hydro Licensing
