Update on State Route Highways Closed Due to Flooding
Storm Water Flooding in Glenn and Butte County
BUTTE AND GLENN COUNTY – Caltrans crews continue to monitor roadway conditions
with ongoing heavy rainfall and flooding. While some routes have reopened, others remain
closed due to flood impacts. Motorists are urged to remain cautious and follow posted
detours for their safety.
Reopened Routes:
· Glenn/Butte County: State Route 32 (SR-32) is now reopened.
· Glenn County: State Route 162 (SR-162) from just outside Willows past 1st Street to
County Road P is now open.
Road Closures:
· Glenn County: State Route 162 (SR-162) remains closed from the State Route
45/SR-162 junction near Butte City to Aguas Frias Road due to flooding. While SR-
162 remains closed, local access for Butte City residents is being permitted as
conditions allow. Motorists should follow any instructions from on-site crews and use
caution when traveling in the area.
Motorists are advised to avoid travel in these areas until further notice. Caltrans crews are
actively monitoring conditions and will reopen the roadway when it is safe to do so.
When Water Is on the Ground, Turn Around! Most flood-related incidents occur when
motorists try to drive through flooded roads. If you can’t see road markings, don’t drive in the
water. Never restart your engine if it stalls in water, as this may cause irreparable damage.
Vehicles can be swept away in just 12 inches of moving water, while trucks and SUVs are
vulnerable in 2 or more feet of water. Stay cautious and avoid flooded roads whenever
possible.
Follow these safety measures:
· Obey posted signs and barricades—road closures are for your safety.
· Stick to the middle lanes where flooding is less likely.
· Avoid pooled water and areas with downed power lines.
· Drive slowly and steadily to maintain control.
· Be mindful of splashing, which can reduce visibility for others.
· Watch for floating debris and test your brakes after passing through water.
· Avoid unpaved shoulders—soft soil can trap vehicles.
· Ensure wipers are in good condition and use headlights with wipers.
· Slow down, allow extra travel time, and increase following distance.
Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11
Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work
Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing
these improvements.
