State Route 162 Overnight Closures Scheduled for Butte City Bridge
Night Closures Planned as Part of a $114 Million Replacement Project
Correction: A detour will be in place directing motorists to use State Route 45 (SR-45) to Ord
Ferry Road to Aguas Frias Road, which leads back to SR-162.
BUTTE & GLENN COUNTIES — Caltrans will fully close the Butte City Bridge on State
Route 162 (SR-162) overnights from Thursday, March 13 through Wednesday, March 19
to allow crews to install joint assemblies across the new bridge deck. The closures will take
place nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., during which time no traffic will be permitted on the
bridge.
A detour will be in place directing motorists to use State Route 45 (SR-45) to Ord Ferry Road
to Aguas Frias Road, which leads back to SR-162. Drivers should be aware that the detour
includes single-lane, signal-controlled traffic on the Ord Ferry Road Bridge across Little Chico
Creek, with a speed limit of 15 mph. Oversized vehicles must comply with an 18-foot width
restriction on Ord Ferry Road between SR-45 and 7 Mile Lane.
The bridge closure is part of a $114 million replacement project that began in 2022 and is
expected to be completed in 2026. The project aims to improve safety and extend the
lifespan of the bridge while enhancing roadway conditions along the corridor. In addition to
replacing the aging structure, the project includes upgrades to drainage systems, improved
signage and striping, and accessibility enhancements to meet Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA) standards. Caltrans advises motorists to plan ahead, allow for extra travel time and
follow posted detour signs.
Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11

these improvements.
