Victory: Our Bill to Stop California’s Gas Car Ban Is Now Law
California’s attempt to ban gas-powered vehicles nationwide just hit a wall.
President Trump has officially signed my Congressional Review Act Legislation to stop
California’s radical gas car mandate from becoming national policy. This is a major win
for drivers across the country, whether you live in California or not.
California's mandate would have forced automakers to make 100% of new car sales
electric by 2035, starting next year with 35%. Failure for each manufacturer to meet the
electric car quota would have meant fines of up to $25,000 per vehicle sold. That
means less inventory to choose from, higher prices, and more burdens for families who
rely on their vehicles. Plus, electric cars don’t exactly work well in freezing cold, Public
Safety Power Shutoffs, or when hauling any distance.
Our law makes it clear: one state doesn’t get to dictate what the rest of the country can
drive, and California is stripped of its authority to make similar rules. From electric truck
and bus mandates to personal vehicles – all of them have been repealed by these Acts
of Congress.
I was happy to help lead this effort in the House and to stand alongside President
Trump at the White House as he signed it into law. Americans deserve the freedom to
choose the car that fits their life, not to be forced into expensive electric vehicles by a
government mandate.
