The project, which is rehabilitating a heavily traveled stretch of highway through Chico, will resume paving Sunday, September 14, when crews return to place the final layer of asphalt. The final paving work will occur overnight from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., continuing the night schedule previously used to minimize daytime traffic disruptions and enhance safety for both crews and drivers. The paving is scheduled to be completed by early October. Remaining construction activities, including striping, signal work, and curb and gutter improvements are scheduled to continue through spring 2026, weather and field extend the life of the roadway, improve ride quality, and enhance safety. The highway remains open in both directions and no major traffic control is anticipated until paving resumes. Minor delays may still occur as crews continue with miscellaneous work throughout the corridor. Caltrans is aware of recent public concerns regarding rough transitions at side street connections. Crews recently completed placement of the bottom layer of asphalt and worked to smooth out those areas as part of ongoing construction. While some initial bumps were reported, contractor Knife River Construction adjusted during the paving process to reduce elevation differences.
