Dear Butte County Supervisors, I’m sure after the news broke about your intentions to receive a 111% raise, this inbox has been flooding. I too am among those wondering how that is justified. I’d like to preface by saying that I am a proud conservative. I also support the men and women in blue, and Mr. Durfee, thank you for your service in law enforcement. I have many personal friends who are cops and I’m very grateful that they are tough enough to do a job that few people can. Now let’s get to it. Unless I’m missing something, a raise is something that takes place for a job well done. With all due respect, when our county looks like hell, no one should be getting any pats on the back. I’m a mom with young children and I am always aware of the possibility that needles could be present when I take my kids to the park. Last summer the creek was one of our favorite spots to spend time, and we all know that it ain’t shut down because of some mysterious avian strain of poop. Bidwell park is what made me fall in love with Chico when I moved here back in 2008. These days the very same park has prompted me to take the steps to obtain a CCW. Read that again. I’m a mom who feels the need to pack heat just to take my kids out and feel safe in the daytime. As cool as I think Doc Holliday was, I’m better at changing diapers than I am at fast draws. What I see happening here is local politics taking a play out of the same book as all the big wigs in DC. People lining their pockets not because they did anything to earn it, but because they could convince people that it makes sense. That disappoints me; especially from the board members who I would think share the same values as me (no offense Tami. And I know you voted against the increase.).
