Subject: We NEED Vol. Station #38 as immediate response resource for Concow Basin
Dear Butte County Board of Supervisors members,
As we near the tragic 24th anniversary of Sept 11, 2001 I remind you many of us in
Yankee Hill/Concow were in the midst of our own evacuations and losses that horrible
week with the Poe Fire. The Concow Fire (1 death)in 2000, the Highway 70 2001(arson),
Lightning Complex '08, and Camp Fire 2018 along with numerous smaller fires has made
us more "resilient" and determined. Unfortunately our area has had the majority of the
fires hammering this County. We have lost a lot of surviving neighbors to other states
with each event. We have always had many great community groups and nonprofits to
help us help ourselves from BC and YH Fire Safe Councils to IAMS Garden.
Now we need COMMON SENSE. We have adjusted to the loss of some of our buildings
ie. the Grange, Concow School etc. but to willingly give up use of #38 that serves
Concow Basin is just foolish. Our volunteers LIVE in the Basin, not Yankee Hill side
where they would have an extra 30 minute loop minimum just to gather equipment to
respond to a call. In our community with the number of medical calls way in Concow
this could mean the difference between life and death. Calfire has made no secret about
their preferences to squeeze out the volunteer system...may work for them with State
coffers but for small communities our Volunteers are invaluable and often the first at
scene.
Please think of what you would want if your friends and family members lived in the
Concow Basin and would have to wait an extra 30 possibly 40 minutes (weather
concerns Killer Hill and the Crossing) for the First Responders to arrive. Station #38 is
THERE, maintained, ready to go, will be supported by the community if need be. We ask
that you don't allow this resource to be wasted. COMMON SENSE in this situation is not
a lot to ask of our representatives.
Respectfully,
Susie Heffernan
