I've talked with neighbors who live along the trail and we've all noticed an increased number of deer crossing Midway around Marybill Ranch Road between Chico and Durham. At least six(!!) deer have been killed around that area (including two babies). I've been told by Butte County Animal Control and Chico Animal Control that they can no longer pick up injured or deceased wildlife so the deer are decomposing along Midway and the bike trail (they are on both sides of Midway). (The first deer was not picked up by Animal Control even though people knew the location because law enforcement had to come shoot the deer after a motorcyclist called to report a car had hit the deer - they left it there to decompose since winter - the bones remain right next to the bike trail along with other carcasses). Along with feeling sadness every time I pass them (I know where each is located) and watching them slowly decompose, they also smell and present further danger for scavengers who come to feed on the carcass because they've also been hit (I saw a bird that had been hit near one of the deer). I run early in the morning and saw three deer during a recent run just south of Marybill Ranch Road crossing Midway, and just this morning, I saw a deer near the intersection of Midway and Oro-Chico Highway running through the orchards. The speed limit is already fast and cars speed; if drivers don't know that deer cross in this area, they have no time to react. **Please consider providing additional funding to Butte County Animal Control so they can again pick up injured and deceased wildlife. Additionally, please please consider placing signs along Midway warning drivers that this is a deer crossing. It's heartbreaking to see so many deer (and especially babies) deceased along the road. Thank you. Janet Fealk
