Subject: PETS Information Request: Tobacco Policy Changes in your Jurisdiction? Happy New Year!
Dear Colleagues,
We are asking for your help in identifying any local tobacco-related policy
changes in your jurisdiction or in the jurisdictions covered by your
jurisdiction/agency.
We are contracted by the California Department of Public Health, California
Tobacco Prevention Program, to maintain the state’s tobacco Policy Evaluation
Tracking System (PETS). PETS supports local tobacco control efforts by cities
and counties across the state.
Specifically, we’re looking for:
1. Policies passed since July 2025 (or currently under consideration)
that address:
· Smokefree air in multi-unit housing
· Secondhand smoke and smokefree air in outdoor spaces
· Retail sales of tobacco or nicotine-containing products
o Including tobacco retail licensing (TRL) ordinances
and restrictions on tobacco or nicotine products,
such as flavored tobacco products
· Other tobacco control policies such as policies to reduce
tobacco product waste or prohibit the sale of electronic
cigarettes. (We do not need specific actions such as
grandfathering an individual tobacco licensee.)
2. The current amount of a local tobacco retailer license fee
If you have not made any changes to your local tobacco control laws since July
2025, there is no need to send us any information.
We’ve made it easy to submit information using our new policy collection
form, available at:
https://airtable.com/appTgTLFhhYx60Mb9/pagGBkoLtta1SrENN/form
You can use the form to upload PDFs of ordinances or resolutions, or
provide links.
If you don’t have the full text of the policy or a link, please share any details
that will help us identify the policy, such as:
· Ordinance/resolution number or title
· Date of passage or meeting(s) where it was discussed
· Jurisdiction name with TRL fee amount
Thank you for your time and continued partnership in protecting public health
across California! Please don’t hesitate to reach out to Jason Soroosh at
jsoroosh@phi.org with any questions.
Sincerely,
The PETS team,
