To improve our deer population estimates for the C-Zones, otherwise known as the Cascades- North Sierra Deer Conservation Unit, staff from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife will count deer from a helicopter that will be flying predetermined north-south transects in known deer winter range east of Highway 99. Helicopter-based surveying is an efficient method to monitor population size, distribution, and demographic composition in these locations. Data from these surveys will help wildlife managers understand population health and will be used to make harvest recommendations to the California Fish and Game Commission, which is the state regulatory authority that adopts zone boundaries, hunting seasons, and tag quotas. Please feel free to direct any questions regarding these surveys to myself at David.Carrothers@wildlife.ca.gov or to our statewide deer coordinator Brian Leo at Brian.Leo@wildlife.ca.gov. Sincerely, Ryan Carrothers _______________________ Environmental Scientist California Department of Fish and Wildlife Northern Region 601 Locust Street Redding, CA 96001 Cell: (530) 604-5041
